Welcome to Global History I/II (HGS41/22) which will extend from the Fall of 2020 (semester1) and continue through the Spring of 2021 (semester 2).
Course Mission:
The mission of this course is to give students a greater understanding of the world, from the earliest people and civilizations to the early modern period and the impact it has had on current day.
Course description: This is a 2-year course and ends in a Regents exam at the end of 10th grade and will cover the topics in Global History from the Early Humans to the Age of Exploration.
Unit 1 – Historical Thinking
Unit 2 – The First Civilizations
Unit 3 – Classical Civilizations
Unit 4 – Political, Social and Cultural Growth
Unit 5 – Mid-Eastern and Eastern Civilizations
Unit 6 – Western Europe and Russia
Unit 7 – Africa and the Americas
Grading Policy
Classwork: 50%
Class work includes any work given during class time, including homework. These assignments may include group work or individual activities. Being prepared and participating in class will also count towards your class work grade.
Assessments (Projects and Tests): 50%
Tests, quizzes, writing pieces, and projects will be used to assess the knowledge and skills you learned from the units we cover. Exams may be retaken, and essays may be revised for a higher grade.
Late Work/Make-up Work
If a student fails to turn in his/her work on time, the student will lose points on the assignment. If a student has an excused absence (such as a doctor’s note), they will have the same number of days they were absent to make up the work with no penalty. If the absence is unexcused, they will lose 5 points a day for up to 3 days after which the assignment will not be accepted.
Feedback/communication
Students will receive feedback and a grade on their work in a timely manner. For short assignments and quizzes, work will be returned within 2 school days. Longer assignments such as papers and exams will be returned within 5 school days. All information regarding assignments or other information will be posted in the front of the classroom of written on the board. Verbal communication will be given as well. Please copy the information into binders.
IMPORTANT - Parental involvement is crucial to student success. I look forward to being a partner in the education of your child. Therefore, please look at PupilPath several times a week to see how they are progressing academically as well as for any behavioral issues. In addition, to keep you aware of what is happening in the classroom, please look at and initial at the bottom of all HW assignments, class notes and handouts and tests, quizzes and papers. Cell Phone/Electronics Policy
Cell phones will be collected at the entrance to the school. No phones or electronic devices are allowed in the classroom.

A binder with loose-leaf paper, dividers and handout folder
Several pens with blue/black ink
Pencils with pencil sharpener
Highlighters
Optional: ruler, small stapler, white-out, scotch tape, colored pencils/markers
Behavior and Participation
Your behavior and participation are important to the classroom-learning environment. If you ask questions, and participate in the lesson, your grades will improve. Failure to participate and/or being disruptive will cause you to lose class work points.
Online Behavior
You are expected to log in on time and show your face (unless prior arrangements are made)
Respect
In order to create a productive classroom community, students will be expected to respect everyone in the classroom. This includes abiding by all school rules while in the classroom, respecting both the teachers’ and classmates’ property, and keeping classroom participation at a constructive, positive level towards others. Unless given permission, working on another subject’s assignment in our class will be seen as a direct action of disrespect towards the teacher.
Punctuality
Attendance is vital to academic success, Therefore, daily, on-time attendance is expected except in extenuating circumstances. Students are expected to arrive on time for class, forming two lines outside of the classroom until further instructed. The teacher will tell the students to enter the room, take their seats, and begin the Do Now exercise. If late, you are to sign in the Late Log. Each lateness will result in an automatic after-school detention.
Housekeeping
Students are expected to clean up after themselves. This means pushing in their chairs, and picking up any garbage they left in their area. In addition, there will be no eating in the classroom. Eating in the classroom leads to spills, rotting food, and the possibility of pests.
Integrity
Each student is expected to be responsible for completing his/her own reading assignments, writing assignments, and projects in a timely fashion. Forging signatures, plagiarizing, or copying another student’s work will result in an automatic zero for the assignment.
